More Awards: Best picks for XBox Live Arcade

Xbox 360This year’s Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) bring fame and recognition for those games available as a digital download to Xbox 360 owners. Finalists were decided by industry journalists, but the final voting was a community effort. Here is who won:

Best Overall Arcade Game:Bomberman
Bomberman Live (Hudson Entertainment)

Best Classic Game:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Konami Digital Entertainment)

Best Original Game:
Pac-Man: Championship Edition (NAMCO BANDAI Games)

Best Family-Friendly Game:
Pac-Man: Championship Edition (NAMCO BANDAI Games)

Best Competitive Multiplayer Game: Pac-Man
Bomberman Live (Hudson Entertainment)

Best Cooperative Multiplayer Game:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Ubisoft Entertainment)

Best-Selling Game:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Ubisoft Entertainment)

Most-Played Game: Worms
Worms (Team17 Software Limited)

Highest-Rated Game:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Konami Digital Entertainment)

Xbox LIVE Arcade Staff Choice:
Pac-Man: Championship Edition (NAMCO BANDAI Games)

The winners definitely deserved it, but somehow I wish that only Xbox Live Arcade “originals” would have qualified. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night already had their time in the limelight, its time to give credit to the newcomers! I’d love to see some new blood show up in these award lists, especially since there are more than 25 studios currently working on XBLA software, with over 100 titles currently available.

The number of downloads for this virtual content has continued to grow, this year more than doubling last. A sign of things to come for sure, but downloadable content - as desirable as it is to publishers - will never steal all the thunder of physical retail games.
